About Omega Seamaster Watches

The Omega Seamaster, created in 1948, began to peak in popularity in the 1950s and 1960s as sports watches earned widespread use. The timepiece most commonly features a stainless steel case and bracelet, along with an Omega symbol clasp. The case-back proudly displays the Omega logo, and the bezel is unidirectional with a blue, black, or silver dial. Thanks to its helium release valve, the watch is water-resistant to an impressive 1200 meters. The luminescent hands and anti-reflective sapphire crystal enhance visibility.

As a result of both its functionality and design, the Seamaster became one of Omega’s most popular lines for amateur and professional divers alike. It also gained the attention of celebrity wearer’s including Prince William, Joe Biden, and Adam Savage. Of course, watch enthusiasts and collectors are perpetually attracted to the piece.

The watch debuted as part of Omega’s 100th-anniversary celebration, with a design based in part on those made for the British Royal Navy during WWII. It found immediate success, becoming a best-seller for the brand and today it remains Omega’s oldest watch in the current collection.

Omega solidified its reputation for creating quality dive watches over ten years before the Seamaster’s debut. In 1932, Yves Le Prieur, a French Nacy officer who is considered the father of modern diving, wore the Omega Marine watch. A few years later, in 1936, Charles William Beebe wore the same model while in a cable-lowered submersible.

The Seamaster embraced its legacy of durability and exploration. To showcase its robust features and ability to withstand extremes, the Omega engineers attached a Seamaster to the outside of an airplane and flew it over the North Pole in 1956. In 1957, Jacques Cousteau and his team used the Seamster throughout their underwater explorations of the Red Sea.

In the mid-1990s, the Seamaster Professional became more popular than the earlier Seamaster 300; however, the 300 again rose to the top when it was selected as a James Bond watch. Because of its connection to the British Royal Navy, the Seamaster 300 was a natural choice for the films and the character. Piers Brosnan wore the famed timepiece in films from the 1990s through the early 2000s, and Daniel Craig then followed suit beginning in 2006. To celebrate this length relationship, Omega created a special edition Seamaster 300 Spectre, which paid homage to the original Seamaster.

In both 1948 and 2012 Omega was the official timekeeper of the London Olympic Games. This honor prompted Omega to release the special edition Omega Seamaster 1948 Co-Axial London 2012. Its limited production (they released only 1,948 watches) has made the piece valuable and highly sought-after.

In 2017, the brand released the 60th Anniversary Limited Edition Omega Seamaster to honor the 1957 model. It looks nearly identical, featuring only indiscernible updates with more modern materials. In 2019, Omega made three experimental watches called the Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep Professionals, which survived a 10,928-meter dive in the Mariana Trench. This set a new record that might just be unbreakable.

The Omega Seamaster has a rich history and a well-respected reputation. Its stunning design and robust functionality allow the piece to maintain the respect of both divers and watch aficionados.
